About This Journey

This half-day experience brings guests close to one of Sichuan’s most expressive folk art forms: shadow puppetry. Guests will meet a local shadow puppetry heritage artist or teacher in Chengdu, learn how shadow puppets are carved, colored, performed, and passed down, and understand how light, leather, music, voice, and story come together on a small stage. Unlike watching a short performance in a tourist venue, this experience focuses on the person behind the tradition: the teacher’s hands, memory, stories, tools, and years of practice. Guests will observe a live demonstration, see traditional shadow puppets up close, learn simple puppet movements, and understand how folk performance once connected villages, festivals, family gatherings, and everyday entertainment.
